Surface Finishing
American Metalcraft Industries has a variety of surface finishing capabilities.
Surface finishing is a term used to describe various industrial processes that alter a metal surface to obtain desired characteristics. Finishing processes can improve appearance; prepare the surface for a secondary treatment; provide corrosion resistance; improve wear resistance; alter surface smoothness & friction; or remove surface flaws like burrs, scratches, and irregularities. Surface finishing is accomplished via some combination of mechanical, abrasive, chemical, or heating processes.
We primarily offer surface finishing to improve and protect appearance or to alter the smoothness and texture of ferrous and non-ferrous metals such as carbon & alloy steel, iron, aluminum, and stainless steel. We specialize in the following methods; but contact us for your other requirements.
- Polishing and buffing
- Tube polishing (up to 12” outside diameter)
- Sand blasting
- Glass bead blasting
- Painting
Polishing is a popular surface treatment that we provide in #4 to #7 finishes.
#4 Architectural Surface Finish: This finish is also known as a satin finish. The finish commonly has fine polishing lines that are uniform in appearance. It is produced by polishing the metal with appropriate grit compounds using a belt or wheel.
#4 Sanitary Surface Finish: This finish is used primarily for stainless steel in the medical and food industries. It is much finer than an architectural finish produced via abrasives with a belt or wheel followed by a non-woven abrasive belt or pad.
This finish is sometimes referred to as a brushed finish. The metal retains some, but not all of its metallic luster with very fine lines or small scratches all running in the same direction. Common brushed finish metals include stainless steel and nickel.
#6 Surface Finish: This finish is also known as a fine satin finish. Polishing lines will be soft and less reflective than a #4 architectural finish. It is produced by polishing with appropriate grit using a belt or wheel and a very fine non woven abrasive belt or pad.
#7 Surface Finish: This finish is a semi-bright finish that will still have some polishing lines but they will be very minor. This is an economic option when a polished part needs to be shiny but not flawless. Carbon steel and iron are commonly polished to this finish before chrome plating. This finish can be made bright by secondary buffing methods.
